Odissi Workshop

Try Odissi – classical dance from East India.

Odissi is a classical temple dance form from eastern India. Dancers wear brass bells around their ankles that accentuate the intricate stamped rhythms and dance steps. Dance technique and stories expressed through graceful hand gestures and facial expressions are woven together into a colorful whole. Odissi is characterized by the dynamics between strong grounding and flowing, lyrical movements. Tribhangi, where the body is bent in three different places, gives Odissi its distinctive sculptural beauty.

Do you want to try an Indian classical dance style? Or do you dance Bollywood, Tribal, or another Indian classical dance form? This is a perfect chance for you to try the technique of Odissi dance, refine hand and arm movements, and add more expression and strength to your dance practice. During two hours, you will be introduced to Odissi basic steps, rhythms, bhangis (sculptural poses), and arm movements. You will also try abhinaya – expression and storytelling through facial expressions and hand gestures. We dance barefoot and wear loose or stretchable pants for mobility. You are welcome regardless of previous dance experience.
